Remember and Forget

These past couple of weeks I have felt a lot of emotions as a mother. Ups and downs, but thankfully, more ups! I was thinking about some of them as I was looking through my pictures and decided that there are some things as a mother I would rather just forget and somethings I hope I always remember! These are just a few examples.

REMEMBER
Ruby reading me stories.
She prefers it that way.

I miss reading her stories and hope she lets me do it again someday! But it is really cute too. I also love that she has started to say "It is Sunday" to everything. It usually doesn't make any sense either. She hears the boys ask all day on Sunday things like "can we play with friends?, Can we watch TV?, Can we play on the computer?" And we always answer with "No, it is Sunday." So now she goes around telling everyone it is Sunday everyday. Today I told her "no more Popsicle" and she said, "MOM! It is Sunday!" If the boys ask to do something or tell her something, she says, "No, it is Sunday!" Today Luke asked to watch smurfs and she responded NO, it is Sunday. I told her it was Tuesday and she she "OH, Okay Luke it is okay, it is Tuesday." She really doesn't get it and it is hilarious to hear her try to make sense.

FORGET
Teething.
Sure, he is smiling now AFTER that second tooth popped through, but MAN oh MAN! Teething is tough on the baby and the mommy! And that is only after 2 teeth!

REMEMBER
Fresh, clean clothes on Easter. And fresh clean children to put in them.

REMEMBER
Ruby letting me dress her up.
Because I don't know how much longer it will last!

FORGET
Flesh wounds inflicted upon kind brother by angry little sister.
You can count all her teeth if you want.
She has more than just 2.

(I'm happy that this is not a regularly occuring event in our house!)

REMEMBER
Kind, loving, big sister and adoring little brother.

REMEMBER
Brotherly advice at the soccer game.
So sweet.

FORGET
How gosh darn difficult it is to take a picture of my kids! Especially on holidays!

After learning that Elder Nelson had 10 children Isaac said, "Wow, he must be really proud of his wife!"

2009

(Isaac said in a serious, matter-of-fact voice.)

"I had a bad dream.... You know what? I know how to make it so you don't have bad dreams...
(here I'm thinking he is going to say pray)
...OPEN your EYES! It is a type of super hero power."

Luke-(speaking to mommy) "When you were a baby you were in Daddy's tummy, right?"
No, I was in Grandma's tummy.
(dumbfounded) "No, her tummy just has food inside!"

Luke--and still..."I really like purple hair. I wish I had purple hair."

"I am Luke Skywalker."
Luke what does Luke Skywalker do?
"He walks."

(L)"When I grow up I'm gonna be a tiger."
(I)"how are you going to do that?"
(L) "My skin is almost orange so when I grow up I'm gonna be a tiger."

Isaac
"Is Ruby really a boy or a girl? Because they could have made a mistake you know."

Is it time for an anatomy lesson? Isaac is still clueless apparently.

Luke
"Ruby is not a kid, she is just a baby."

"Well, I didn't see me do it." This is after I scolded him for doing something naughty...only to find out later that it wasn't him, it was Isaac--that is why he didn't see himself do it...he was so confused why he was getting in trouble for something he didn't remember doing!

a quote from ToyStory that is quite hilarious coming out of Luke's mouth, especially the way he changes his voice to say it.

Ike
"If there was a baby contest with all the other babies, Ruby would for sure win. She is the cutest out of all the other babies." Isaac is so proud of his baby sister and loves her very much.

2008

Questions from Isaac:

"Why do you have to do (make) money?"

"Why do we have moms and dads?"

I asked him why he thought we had moms and dads and he had no idea...and returned the question, "why do YOU think we have them?"

UPDATE: Isaac just informed me he figured out why we have moms and dads. Finally, an answer to one of the world's greatest questions.

"We have moms and dads so they can use the hot stuff for us. Like the oven and the stove and the microwave."

We tell Isaac to eat his carrots because it will help him see well in the dark. One night, Isaac called his dad in the room to read something to him, when the lights were out--the room was pitch black.

Ike, "Daddy, can you read this to me?"

Dad, "No, it is too dark in here."

Ike, "But don't you eat carrots?"

After visiting the doctor's office with me and seeing a medical picture of a baby being born Isaac and I had the following conversation.

Ike, "Is that how the baby is born?"
me, "Yes."
Ike, "Good thing I'm a boy."
me,"That is right, you won't ever have a baby but your wife will."
Ike, "Remember mommy? I'm not going to grow up to be anything? I won't have a wife."
me, "Oh ya, I remember."

Isaac still maintains FIRMLY that he will not grow up to be anything except a "big" boy. Let's just say he isn't fond of the idea of leaving mommy and daddy yet. He knows that people who really grow up to be something, leave their homes and get new ones.

Isaac is famous for his dramatic responses when asked to do work.

After I ask him to throw something away.

"All by myself? But that will take all day!"

After I ask him to get dressed.

"But that will take forever!"

After I ask him to go to the bathroom

"Why do I always have to do that?"

Usually I ask him if he wants to change jobs with me because I really have to do things all day that he would not want to do. He always tells me he doesn't want to trade and the whining stops.
Isaac, that looks great, who taught you how to do that?

"my brain just taught me."

After a FHE lesson on the Plan of Salvation (pre-earth life, war in heaven etc) Isaac said a very thoughtful prayer.

"Please help me to Choose the Right and when Satan comes at night could you please slam the door and punch him in the face?"

Amen.

Questions from Ike:

"What is a hobby, how can I have a hobby?"

"What does it mean when you say something someone doesn't like and they say, 'you're fired!'"

He is in the question everything stage. How do you make ___(insert any word you like)? he has practically asked how to make everything these past few weeks. I am feeling kinda dumb.

After telling Isaac that he needs to slow down and not grow up so fast he said,
"Okay, but how can I? I just love to eat so much. I am always hungry!"

from funny man Luke:

"Today is Tuesday! That means I get to go to the Dinosaur museum!"

"I had a pink treat! That means I get to go to the Dinosaur museum!"

"I went potty! (probably in his diaper) That means I get to go to the Dinosaur museum!"

There is no logic. He really says this after almost anything. Funny kid.

Sometimes when Isaac complains about his food being too hot, we tell him that after the prayer it will probably be okay. Well, the other day this is what happened...

Isaac, "oh, my food is too hot, we need to say a prayer."

(says a quick blessing on the food, then takes a bite and spits it out)
"oh man, it didn't work, we should say another prayer."
me, "Isaac, do you think we say a blessing on the food so that it will cool down?"

Isaac, "yes."
me, "oops, let me tell you why we pray for our food...:)"

There have been a lot of questions about girls around our house lately...

Isaac asks, "How do girls burp?"

Kyle wonders, "Do you think our little girl will be petite?"

Sometimes I like to answer with a question..."Have you seen our boys?" ...followed by a loud burp.

Questions answered.

(after trying to get me dirty with a dirty juice cup to "play a game" I told Luke I didn't want him to get me dirty.)

Luke said convincingly, "No, it is okay, the doctor said you can get dirty a little bit"

I use the "doctor said" a lot with my kids..."the doctor said you need to eat your vegetables to be strong...etc."

It is catching on!!

Sometimes Isaac licks his lips a lot...till they are chap. I always tell him to stop and today he said, "why do lips have to be dry?" I told him because they get sore if we lick them too much. His response was brilliant. "Well, then our lips should be here (pointing right below his nose) and here (pointing right above his chin) far away from our tongues so we can't reach them."

Smart boy, always thinking of a good solution to a problem.

Later he realized that he could reach those spots with his extremely long tongue. He decided our lips should be even further away...our forehead and our neck. He isn't joking when he says this. He is really thinking it through.

Luke, after hearing the baby's heart beat, "The baby is coming out!!" He said this like it was a warning...like, watch out, here it comes!

Isaac, after being convinced that the baby MIGHT be a girl, "well, maybe we can try having a sister, and if we don't like it, we can give her back."

Luke hates hot cars. When we put him in the car seat he closes his eyes, covers his face with his hands, and screams, "Turn the sun OFF!" No matter what I tell him, he is convinced that I can turn the sun off and doesn't know why I haven't done it yet.

After becoming frustrated with a shoe that wouldn't go on properly Luke screamed, "That shoe is being mean to me!"

"_______(insert name), You are the BEST!" Lou

"mommy, you have a time out!" Lou

After trying to clean his sticky hands, I guess I pushed too hard with a baby wipe. "mommy don't hit me. You have to be nice!" Lou

"Mommy, we really need to buy lime-away because it cleans and protects your home." Ike

After telling Luke that I hoped I didn't throw up on him while changing his diaper because it was so stinky, Isaac said, "Lukey sure is a cute baby. I hope you don't throw up on him, because then he wouldn't be so cute."

2007
"Mommy, Luke picked my nose for me!" me, "NO! don't let him do that!" Isaac, "but mommy, that is a good thing, he was helping me!"

"who made *tommy? Heavenly Father didn't make him because he is mean, so who made him?" Ike

"I love moms and dads. Mommy and daddy are my favorite persons" Ike

After throwing up and me explaining to him that he can't have something to drink, "but mommy, water is healthy!" Ike

After watching me rub my head I explained to him that I had a headache he said, "It's okay mommy, everybody makes mistakes sometimes." Ike

"Big boys are not babies...big boys are sons. When I grow up, we will have 2 daddies because I will be a daddy and we will still have daddy." Ike

"When I grow up, I am going to fly." (Will you give me a ride?) "No, mommy, you are too big." Ike

"Mommy, don't cry, mommies don't cry, only babies cry." Ike

"Remember mommy, we EAT cheetahs" Ike

(After scolding a 3 year old for dripping Popsicle on his shorts)..."Mommy, I didn't drip, the popsicle dripped!" Ike

"Ahh, mommy a bee!"
